Gravity Rainbow Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition Thomas Pynchon Frank Miller 9780143039945 Books

I love reading, and maybe there's something to this book that I'm missing...but I've tried reading it several times and hated it. I got to the part with the guy obsessed with bananas... maybe 50-70 pages in. It's dull. And written in a very stylized manner that I'm sure you just absolutely love if you love it. I don't. It's also extremely masculine. I get it; it's war. But I love and enjoy Hemingway and Steinbeck and other masculine (even verging on misogynistic, Hemingway) writers who write about war and change and hardship. This...not so much.

Gravity Rainbow Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition Thomas Pynchon Frank Miller 9780143039945 Books Reviews

This book is really fun and funny, just don't worry about it making any lineal since
Yeah it's a gigantic difficult doorstop of insanity. Abandon all hope, ye who want compact, fully-comprehensible narratives that don't contain psychic octopi and talking lightbulbs. For the rest of you, this is a sexy, science fictiony romp through a post-WWII hell of nuclear paranoia. It has a plot -- it's about a guy named Slothrop whose erections are a form of precognition, working for a group of secret agents trying to psychically defeat Hitler, and his adventures in Germany immediately following the war, where he becomes a superhero named Rocketman (and, also, about life, the universe, the afterlife, and etc.). But really... forget about connecting the dots and just let the Pyncho-paranoid poetry of the Preterite wash over you (like Joyce, reading aloud is most helpful). And for God's sake don't EAT OR DRINK while reading -- there are many passages that will result in unexpected laughing fits and you WILL blast cornflakes through your nose. Now everybody...
This story is excellent and very funny. It makes you take a new look at things like the usual war story, which this is not. The amount of information in it, about rocketry, history, Europe itself, is staggering and Pynchon keeps it interesting.
Gravity's Rainbow is one of the greatest works of fiction in the history of mankind, ranking with the best of James Joyce, Franz Kafka, William Faulkner, Mark Twain, Leo Tolstoy, Jane Austen, Herman Melville, William Shakespeare, Guy De Maupassant, and Henry James. Against the backdrop of World War II, Thomas Pynchon depicts the madness of paranoia, which has become a post modern religion for many who seek meaning in a meaningless, cruel world. This theme of paranoia is juxtaposed to a parallel theme of entropy (i.e, randomness). Gravity's Rainbow is a dark, difficult work of art that is an insightful commentary on the loss of purpose and faith that so shattered the West and especially Europe after the two great wars and the great depression. (Note the lack of scientific, political or cultural contributions by Europe after World War II in light of the parade of giants like Beethoven, Einstein, Queen Elizabeth, Descartes, Galileo, Picasso, Newton, Gothic architecture, Shakespeare, and Michelangelo, to cite just few of the many flowers from Europe). The writing in Gravity's Rainbow is vivid, constantly metaphorical (always a sign of genius), and tense.
There are no words to describe how it feels to read Thomas Pynchon's GRAVITY'S RAINBOW. What other novel has offered so much material at a similar price? To delve into locations spanning nearly every country, portraits spanning every lifestyle? There is a deep investigation in this work of the human spirit, the aftermath of war and its impact on the mind, the age-old battle of good versus evil (the bad guys simply called "They"), and though it takes place in 1945, it feels undated, forever relevant, qualifying for the most serious of book-club chitchats.

GRAVITY'S RAINBOW doesn't read like any other book, literally. Post-modern to the max. Therefore, no reader should take lodging in its universe without really accepting the fact that this is not an easy read. There are hundreds of characters, myriads of subplots, lots of German and French that appears randomly without an asterisk to note its translation. This novel moves beyond encouraging the reader to sit and gaze through it - it begs of you to hear its every note of its multivalent song. To take the journey with its main character, Tyrone Slothrop, and to compassionately question the material presented in front of you.

Many people will likely give up before getting 20 pages in, which is very sad. The book has so much to offer to its reader. It talks of very unique topics, teaches several eerie facts, answers a handful of hard questions, and even asks harder questions, questions that outstrip life itself!

My first Pynchon book was THE CRYING OF LOT 49, and I absolutely loved it. But, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW, has become a close friend to me. Its more than a book. SO worth the $20-something you pay for it!
