I'm not sure where all these good reviews came from - purchased perhaps? The novel started out interesting but the narrative was slow and rambling - way too much backstory. I started skimming because I wanted to find out who the killer was - and what happened to his son and the killer was totally unbelievable. I really gag when a characters says it was 20 years ago and I remember....Seriously? Come on. Some folks liked the poetry - great, read a book of poetry. I got this book because it was supposed to be a mystery.Product details

Where The Broken Lie edition by Derek Rempfer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This story made me smile, it made me cry and gave me a deeper understanding of the enduring power of love. The author paints a vivid picture of small town life and lifelong friendships. It is a cleverly written mystery that had me hungry for each next page. It's one of those books that will have you reading through the night; it's really hard to put down.
This book was so interesting, nostalgic and suspenseful, all at the same time. It is very well written, no cussing and no sex scenes and still good? I know, in this day and age that is almost unheard of, but this is one of those. It never lagged, kept my interest and my main suspect was innocent! So, read this book, feel connected to another person's grief and yet be able to find hope. Great book, am checking to see what else this author has written.
I really enjoyed this novel and would have given five stars if not for some flaws in the style of the writing. The treatment of point of view became confusing at times. A change in view was offset in italics but italics were also used in other applications--this caused some confusion. Some of the switch to the unknown character's point of view sometimes did not make sense. In any event, this was a highly entertaining book and I do recommend it. It is not a riveting mystery but it has a few twists and the characters are well-developed and the reader can easily connect. The author's use of imagery was handled quite well.
This book was a quick read for me because I just wanted to know what had happened to put this poor guy in the place he was at mentally & spiritually. We never know how we would deal with certain situations until it actually happens to us. The first 3/4 of the story are a big mystery and then it all starts to make sense. Good job keeping my attention, Mr. Rempfer. I look forward to reading more from you.
Where the Broken Lie is a well written story of life's gravest, most tragic losses and how individuals cope or fail to cope with it. The story draws you into the characters and makes the reader a part of them. It shows the best of characters and the lowest as well. It shared moments of happiness and good times and well as those of guilt, death, and illness and the impacts those events have on us. He shows how people can hide behind a bright colored cloak many deeds and emotions.
The author has a great skill in defining feelings and thoughts of his characters.
This is a book well worth a reader's time. It will leave you shaking your head and still pondering the story long after you have fin nished
I had trouble reading this book mostly because the emotions are so real and palpable sometimes it was very painful and yes in many ways the book is painful. The sorrow Tucker has over the loss of his son dovetailing with a remembrance of a long ago first love lost is so well written it hurts. Anyone who has experienced any kind of loss can identify with this.
The people in the town are so realistically drawn they are people you know or have known so when something like the loss of a child occurs it affects many. But there is hope and the cemetery letters are quite beautiful in how they touch each others' lives.
The mystery part of the book is- well I was surprised beyond all at the end and will not give it away. This is a well written and thought out book and if you allow yourself to remain open will touch you.
This is a thought provoking book about death, life and coming to terms with both. Almost immediately the reader learns that Tucker and Tammy have lost a child, Ethan, though the cause of his death isn’t revealed until later in the book. Tucker has a need to return to his childhood roots, to live for a while with his grandparents, sans Tammy and their daughter Tory. There’s obviously a lot of pain surrounding the death of Ethan, and Tucker needs separation to work through some of it.
The parallel story is the death of Tucker’s friend, Katie Cooper, years earlier when he and she were almost teenagers. As he reviews the circumstances of her death, as an adult, he sees there are a lot of holes in the story of her abduction and murder. He comes to realize the person convicted of killing her, didn’t do it. Thus, Tucker plays detective, and ultimately arrives at who really killed Katie. While he can’t right the wrongs done, he can confront the murderer.
The death of Ethan, and its circumstances were akin to those of my own younger sister, Judy, 65 years ago. In “Hearts Left Behind,” the pain of loss Tucker and Tammy and Tory go through is palatable. It’s deep and agonizing. They question God, themselves and each other. And the description of their pain has given me insight into the pain my parents must have felt, but I never saw or heard expressed, over the loss of Judy. But now, I realize it had to be there, even though unseen.
“Hearts Left Behind” isn’t a tearjerker. It is a thoughtful and thought-filled book. It reminded me of “A Child at Dawn” by Molly Fumia. Both books give readers insight into the gut-wrenching pain endured by parents, and others, at the death of a child, and at the same time finding one’s way out of the pain and living with the loss.
I'm not sure where all these good reviews came from - purchased perhaps? The novel started out interesting but the narrative was slow and rambling - way too much backstory.
