So strong are the characters and so vivid the images in The Cross Garden that they continue coming back to me like personal memories. While the novel carefully worked its way to the climax, I became completely absorbed in a desire to know how the characters would meet their tangled fates. Believable emotions and related acts, acts that were at times equally regrettable and courageous, shape the landscape, making the people knowable, yet mysterious. I was never disappointed with the author's understanding of human nature and felt from the beginning that I was in the hands of a master. Pulsing its way through the book like the bass in a jazz quartet, the novel's river keeps time to the rhythmic flow of the past intruding into the present, wanted or not. Marlin Barton is one of the finest writers in literature today and deserves a far wider readership.Product details

The Cross Garden Marlin Barton 9781929490400 Books Reviews
The settings of The Cross Garden are inspired by real places in west Alabama. An online tourism guide with beautiful photos of some of the locations is available in the October 2011 feature of the Southeastern Literary Tourism Initiative. The feature also includes an excerpt that deals with this question Where is the body buried?
Fans of Faulkner's best writing traits--tension between characters, rural settings, and faithful representations of genuine characters--will enjoy this novel. Those who hated some of Faulkner's more, shall we say "complicated" literary patterns, fear not! This story is very comprehensible, even a fast read.
The Cross Garden is a book that is hard to put down. You will be absorbed until the last word.
I couldn't put this book down when I started reading it. The characters are captivating, the plot creates a very realistic tension, and the style is eloquent and clear. No matter whether someone is a fan of "Southern fiction," this novel is a very good read.
