Should the Civil War be changed?Two of my favorite subjects, The Civil War and Time Travel, are beautifully married together in a terrific story by Fred Holmes—Return To Sender! Firstly, the sci-fi time travel genre can either be horribly bad or wonderfully well done: There really is NO in between. Secondly, since there is no scientific definition of time, this usually allows the writer to run amok in their self created time travel world—much to the chagrin of most serious readers. So although time travel is one of my favorite genres, I am always extremely leery of any and all time travel novels (as I am of alternate history novels). That being said, Return To Sender is a gem. Basically, this time travel novel centers around changing the outcome of the Civil War. But, and this is huge, it is done in a subtle way and spends a lot of time on the “how” so as NOT to be the usual over-the-top gratuitous time travel thriller. The author uses due diligence concerning how very little changes in the past can lead to monumental changes to the future. This insures realism to Return To Sender and kept the story fresh and engaging. The dramatic conclusion is superbly done and will give the reader pause as to the profound realities of changing the past—even for the best of reasons!
No gratuitous sex, language or violence. Action is timely and well presented.
Character development was very well done which greatly enhanced the plot by providing realism. The reason so many time travel novels fail is 1. Lack of realism, 2. Flawed attention to detail, and 3. Weak to nonexistent character development. Return To Sender has all three in abundance, ergo it is a success.
It is always rewarding to find a good book about time travel as so many are ghastly. Looking forward to Mr. Holmes next time novel Escape from Helmira.

I really enjoyed this book, from the beginning to the end was one surprise to another, my second guessing was useless! A lot of the details of the past made me imagine what it might have been like back then, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience something thought provoking and a little spooky! I was a little leery of but happy with the ending.
A fascinating concept of time travel developed to the point of conviction while reading the novel. The author provides the details of the
surroundings and characters to a degree that I feel a part of the time and place as events occur. Depending on your political leanings
you have the opportunity to take sides in the story line. The flow of the tale kept my interest and I looked forward to to each chapter.
This book will appeal to both time-travel fans as well as civil war aficionados. Very well-written for a first time author, it's engaging from the start but gets more compelling as you get deeper into the story. Well researched and well told, it's worth the read. Looking forward to the upcoming sequel.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though I am really not interested in time travel. I like historical fiction and weaving time travel in with history of the Civil War South made for a very interesting tale. It actually seemed believable! I couldn't put it down - wanted to see what was going to happen next. Fred Holmes did a great job of entertaining me. Have recommended it to another book friend who does read books on time travel.
Fred Holmes makes time travel exciting and fun - and even somewhat educational. Because of the his ability to create people and situations that are believable, you are there with Carleton Venable VI as he goes about changing history. You don't have to be a time travel buff to enjoy this novel. It is a tale anyone who has an interest in people, in the dynamics of human desires, or in hostory, will love this book. Don't miss it.
I could not finish this book in a hurry....I loved reading a few chapters and just contemplating the possibilities for a day. This is more than a time travel book. I don't usually read a book more than once, but I will make an exception.
Mr. Holmes chose an interesting time in history to suggest changes made via time travel. In this time of turmoil it is entertaining to consider what we might change via a "splice in time" as presented in this book.
I highly recommend spending time with this novel....you won't regret the way it changes your view and makes one think...."what if"???
If you love a time travel read as much as I do, you're in for a treat with "Return to Sender." The litmus test for a good time travel novel is the vehicle how is it done? In some novels, the travel just magically happens; in others, the vehicle is clever but impossible. Holmes, however, constructs a theory that is so plausible it has the reader searching for flaws. The premise of the novel is compelling Can a time traveller sent back to the time of the Civil War perform actions that would change the outcome of the war? In a plot that has more turns than a Rubik's cube, Holmes weaves a journey through the years, using the history and geography of the times as his guide. As the travels of the hero neared an end, I found myself turning pages, open-mouthed, shaking my head in wonder. What if... indeed?
